Description

To elucidate the process, in which polyethylene mixed with a crosslinking agent and a foaming agent was heated at a temperature high enough to decompose both the agents simultaneously, the specific volume and cell diameter of the foam were measured. In this process, the decomposition of foaming agent was accelerated by the decomposition heat of crosslinking agent and the expansion proceeded to some extent while crosslinking was still in progress. Therefore, the expansion was not suppressed even when a large amount of crosslinking agent was used and a foam having a high gel content was produced. When the mixture was predecomposed under a gas pressure, thereby suppressing the expansion below the closest packing, and heated again to make full expansion, a foam having as many fine cells as the foaming agent can be produced.
