Description
Poly (4-vinylpyridine) was partially quaternized with ethyl bromide to obtain hydrophilic membranes for the separation of aqueous solutions by pervaporation and the effect of quaternization on the pervaporation rate of water through these membranes was studied. Contrary to the previous observation the water flux decreases with the increase in the degree of quaternization, presumably due to the formation of strong coulombic interaction between the polymer chains.
