The morphology of high molecular weight (Mw=6×105) polyethylene film crystallized under uniaxial or biaxial stretching above the melting point was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray measurements. The fibrillar structure appeared on these films by stretching at temperatures from 130 to 150°C. The super oriented ivy-like fibrils were produced by simultaneous biaxial stretching 5×5 at 145°C. The fine fibril structure produced by the oriented crystallization of these films depends very much on the stretching temperature and its ratio. The macro-fibril crystals observed with the scanning electron microscope had the diameters of 0.12 μm and 0.26 μm by the number average and weight average, respectively. The long period of the oriented direction determined by small-angle X-ray scattering measurement was 505Â. It is likely that the extended chain crystals were formed in these fibrils by the bi-component crystallization.
