A powder of PFA was blended with a powder of PTFE wax at the ratio of 3: 1. Then the blend was molded into a sheet with a heat press at 360°C. The blend sheet was annealed for 13 minutes at 360°C and then cooled down to room temperature in the air. When this sheet was fractured in liquid N2. Many small particles ca. 30 nm in diameter were observed on the fracture surface of the sheet. A major cause of this phenomenon is the strain which was formed by the development of spherulites of PTFE wax. In case of a PFA sheet and a blend of PFA with PTFE, which has the molecular weight of ca. 3.7×106, such a phenomenon was not observed. A PTFE sheet was sandwiched between two PFA sheets, and the sheet was fractured perpendicularly to the sheet surface. Four different layers were observed on the fracture surface: firstly PFA, secondly PTFE, thirdly the interface between PFA and PTFE, and lastly the interface between adjoining layers of PFA. The interface between adjoining PFA layers was formed by the shear created between the melted PFA layer in contact with PTFE and the PFA layer which had started to crystallize.
