Description

The effects of draw rate and temperature on the necking stress σn of high density polyethylene were investigated. σn at an extremely low draw rate, i. e. the critical necking stress σc, was discussed as a problem of phase equilibrium between the crystalline and amorphous phases induced by fracture of crystallite during the deformation. Approximate equation, σc=xΔGm/ (αn-1), was derived thermo-dynamically where x is the crystallinity, ΔGm the Gibbs' free energy of fusion and αn the neck draw ratio. σc obtained by experiment at 33-105°C agreed well with that calculated by this equation. The effects of draw rate and temperature on necking stress were discussed in terms of viscous flow of amorphous phase, and the shift factor derived from necking viscosity obeyed the William-Landel-Ferry equation at the draw rate of 1-5×105mm/min.
