Description

Flame retardation of the complexes of various bivalent metal ions with partially phosphorylated poly (vinyl alcohol) (phos. PVA) has been studied using TGA and DTA analyses. The order of percent weight residues of these complexes at 700°C was as follows ; Ni (II) > Zn (II) >Co (II) >Cu (II) > Mn (II). Ni (II) -phos. PVA complex showed the highest percent weight residue of 73.8%, at 1000°C. The results suggests the same stepwise reactions as reported by Lyons (phosphoric acid→metaphosphoric acid → polymetaphosphoric acid) occurred. Flammability of cotton fabrics treated with the metal-phos. PVA complexes has been evaluated by the testing method (JIS-L-1091). The fabric treated with the Ni (II) -phos. PVA complex showed a good flame retardant.
