Abstract

To make clear the mechanism of the fiber formation of silk fibroin, critical shear rates of liquid silk (water content of 75-86%) of matured silkworms (Bombyx mori and Nd-s) were determined by press deformation method under various weights. Shear rates of liquid silk fibroin and sericin in the silkgland were calculated from the viscosities of the liquid silk fibroin and sericin. In the posterior and middle silkgland, no random→β-form transition of the liquid silk fibroin was found. But in the anterior silkgland, nucleation (β-form) of it was observed. These results correlate with the changes of conformation of liquid silk in the silkgland.
