On-line gel permeation chromatography/Fourier transform infrared (GPC/FT-IR) spectroscopy was developed to examine the molecular weight dependency of the polyoxyethylene (POE) content of dimethylsiloxane methyl (POE) siloxane copolymers (POE-DMSi). The absolute values of the average EO mol number and POE content were measured by 1H NMR spectrometry for 8 fractions of the POE-DMSi obtained by the preparative GPC. The absorbance ratio of C-O-C (1160 cm-1) and Si-O (1070 cm-1) by GPC/FT-IR had a good correlation (r=0.941) with the absolute POE content of POE-DMSi measured by 1H NMR. The method developed in this study revealed that the higher EO mol number reduced reactivity to the siloxane chain and resulted in higher POE content at low molecular weight region. The method could also be utilized as a rapid, on-line determination and monitering method of the POE content of POE-DMSi.
