Abstract
In this research, we have applied a digital image analysis method to study morphology of polymer alloys quantitatively. We developed several techniques to analyze the morphology of polymer alloys. As an example, we chose Nylon 6, 6/poly (phenylene oxide) /rubber alloy. The morphology was observed with electron microscopy. We developed some new methods to estimate the randomness and the degree of clustering for particle patterns. We also analyzed the regularity of the morphology using the concepts of informational entropy. We could find some clear relationships between the parameters of the morphology analyzed with digital image analysis and the physical properties such as Izod impact strength, tensile strength, tensile elongation, bending strength, bending modulus and heat distortion temperature. We have also studied the mechanism of toughening based on digital image analysis results.
