Description

Stimuli-responsive supramolecular materials inspired by biological systems have attracted much attention in recent years. Herein, redox-responsive supramolecular materials are reported by fusion of polymer chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. We selected a host-guest inclusion complex between β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and ferrocene (Fc) as the molecular recognition moiety. The reduced state of Fc is a hydrophobic molecule that resides in the cavity of βCD, whereas the oxidized ferrocenium cation (Fc+) is too hydrophilic to be included into the cavity. βCD and Fc are introduced into polymer side chain to create redox-responsive supramolecular materials.
