Abstract

The Trommsdorff-Norrish (T-N) effect plays an important role on the phase separation during the polymerization of methacrylate monomers bearing different alkyl chain lengths. We investigated this by using FT-IR spectroscopy combined with phase contrast microscopy and light scattering (LS) for four different methacrylates [dodecyl 2-methacrylate (DMA), 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA), n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) and 2-methylpropylmethacrylate (MPMA)] and a styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene block co-polymer (SEBS) guest polymer. We chose those alkylated host polymers because they show different viscosities and we discussed the results obtained for polymerization kinetics and morphology in light of the different viscosities of the host polymer. We found that BMA/SEBS and MPMA/SEBS systems exhibit the T-N effect and the polymerization conversion drastically increases at a certain irradiation time. The EHMA/SEBS system also shows the T-N effect but only exhibits a modest increase in the polymerization conversion because of the higher mobility compared to the BMA/SEBS and MPMA/SEBS mixtures. On the other hand, the T-N effect was not observed in a mixture using DMA because of the low Tg of PDMA.
