Description

We demonstrated the modification of conjugated polymers containing 2,5-prydinyl (P1) and thiazole (P2) in the film state by treatment with acid vapors. After the acid (HCl, BF3) vapor treatments, the absorption spectra of P1 films were red-shifted due to a charge transfer interaction between the electron-acceptor modified-2,5-pyridinyl moiety and the electron-donor 2,5-dioctyloxyphenylene unit. On the other hand, there is no clear absorption change in P2 film after HCl vapor treatment, even through the spectrum after BF3-vapor treatment shows a broad absorption band that indicates a charge transfer interaction. The coordination of BF3 to P1 and P2 was determined by high performance solid-state 19F NMR spectroscopy. The existence of N-B coordination bonds and a weak BF3-triple bond interaction were supported by the characteristic 19F chemical shifts and their relaxation times (T1F).
