A montmorillonite from Matsuki mine, Akita Prefecture, was saturated with Ca, Mg, Na and K ions, respectively. The basal reflection patterns of the cationsaturated specimens were examined by an X-ray diffractometer under controlled humidity conditions ranging from 0 to 100 per cent relative humidity. With decreasing relative humidity, the phase with smaller basal spacing appears in each specimen, but two phases often coexist at the transitional steps. X-ray diffraction patterns of (Ca, Na)-montmorillonites collected from an alteration zone of a Kuroko deposit of Matsuki mine were examined under 40% relative humidity, under which the difference of basal reflection angles between Ca-montmorillonite and Na-montmorillonite was especially clear. These patterns were compared with calculated X-ray diffraction profiles, and it was concluded that there would be a segregation structure of interlayer Ca and Na ions in these montmorillonites.
