Abstract

In a confluent pipe when the velocity increases or the vapour pressure is high, cavitation occurs in the neighborhood of the corner at the confluent part. It causes noise, vibration, and sometimes cavitation damage. In the present paper, a theory is developed for the cavitation flow due to a right angled confluent pipe. A wake model is used in analysis. As the numerical examples, the shape of cavity streamline originating from the corner, the length of cavity and the cavity height are presented for a value of 1.0, which is the width ratio of branch pipe to main pipe. The length and thickness of resulting cavity are the function of the cavitation parameter and the velocity ratio of the branch stream to main stream. That is, the length and the thickness of the cavity increase with decreasing the cavitation parameter and the velocity ratio. As the result, the effective flow width is decreased. The cavitation parameter on the condition of the supercavitation is increased as the velocity ratio decreases.
