Abstract

Sufficient nutrient intake is necessary during the period of pregnancy and lactation, and a continuous follow-up to establish healthy eating habits and weight control is important for improving the outcome of pregnancy and health of the child. This study aims to determine whether the dish-based “Food Guide Spinning Top for Pregnancy and Lactation” can be used as an effective self-monitoring tool for nutrition education among pregnant women. Forty-two healthy pregnant women at up to 18 weeks of gestation, who were attending an obstetric department in Tokyo, provided written informed consent to participate in this program from December 2007 to September 2008. Of these women, 36 women who had completed three 24-hour recalls and questionnaires in the first, second, and third trimester were included in this analysis. Subjects were randomly assigned to group A (nutrient- or food-based guidance) and group B (dish-based guidance) by the block assignment method. Changes in physical status and dietary intakes were examined. Significant increases were observed in the number of servings of vegetable dishes in group B, and adequate intake was observed at the third assessment. Stage of change and self-efficacy in establishing a well-balanced diet were improved in group B alone. This study shows that self-monitoring with “Food Guide Spinning Top for Pregnancy and Lactation” in addition to individual counseling is effective in promoting changes in the dietary behaviors of healthy pregnant women.
