The study was performed to clarify the relationship between bowel habits and dietary fiber intake in six male and five female boarders of a professional school aged 18 and 19 years. Their nutrient intakes for six days and the bowel movements for the last four days of the six day period from Monday to Saturday in June, July, September and November were determined and the following results were obtained.
1) Frequency of bowel movements was 0.6-0.8times/day in females and 0.9-1.0times/day in males. Fecal weights were 38-71g/day in the former and 143-164g/day in the latter, showing a sexual difference.
2) Dietary fiber intake broken down by total meal and staple foods was significantly lower for females than for males at any of the measurement periods. The intake from between-meal snacks showed no sexual differences, with a slightly higher tendency for females. The sexual difference in the total dietary fiber intakes from meals and snacks therefore became smaller.
3) Relationship between fecal weights and dietary fiber intakes from total diets, meals and staple foods was determined. Correlation coefficients were highest in the intake from staple foods (γ=0.683), followed by the intake from meals (r=0.665) and the total intake (γ=0.553).
