The pattern of chronic degenerative diseases was analyzed using the individual data cards concerning the cause of death of dynamic statistics of population by sex, age, the cause of death and dwelling place. The regional specificity of the pattern of chronic degenerative diseases was recognized.
Healthy 50 males and 55 females 60 years of age and older (average 71.2 years old, and almost all the respondents had no jobs) who live in two areas with regional specificity in respect of the cause of death were investigated for their dietary habits. Heart diseases are dominant in one area and cerebrovascular diseases in the other as the causes of death.
All food intakes by individuals were studied for 3 days and their dietary habits were also investigated using a questionnaire. The results were treated with multi-fluent analysis and the pattern of food consumption was discussed.
It became obvious that there were marked differences in each subjects and areas. In the areas where heart diseases were dominant causes of death, people had western type of dietary habits consisting of bread, coffee, milk and snacks. They had plenty of dishes other than staple food. Only 17% took rice three times a day in this area.
On the other hand, in the rural area where cerebrovascular dieases were dominant causes of death, people kept traditional dietary habits. They ate more rice and less of other dishes. About 70% of them ate rice three times a day along with soy bean paste soup and pickles.
It was also noticed that there were marked deviations in figures for individuals investigated. Subjects in the first area took carbohydrate by more than 3.8 times, and fat by more than 2.2 times than required. On the contrary, in the second area where cerebrovascular diseases are dominant, there were people whose intake of fat or energy was still under the level recommended.
