A questionnaire was first conducted about the pattern of bowel movements, the physical condition, the living habits or life style, and the food intake of two groups of female students aged 18 to 20 at women's junior colleges. The first group of 51 students were conscious of some constipation, while the second group of 63 students had been bothered by constipation with a bowel movement frequency of 3 times/week or less. The students in both groups were then made to take chlorella vulgaris strain CK-5 (CV), and the effects were observed on the frequency of bowel movement (times/week), the total stool amount, the feeling of comfort, and the stool consistency.
The initial questionnaire showed that, with both the groups, there was a tendency for bowel movement to be irregular, and that the subjects were suffering from discomfort. The subjects in both the groups complained of general malaise, and those in the second group tended to stay up till late at night, slept late into the morning, and ate no breakfast. The intake of such foods as vegetables, bean curd (tofu), and others made from soybeans, which are said to relieve constipation, was low in both the groups.
In both the groups, the intake of CV increased the frequency of bowel movement and the total stool amount, and also improved the stool consistency and the feeling of comfort. The effect of CV on the frequency of bowel movement was recognized even after stopping the CV intake. The results indicate that constipation would be improved by the intake of CV, which suggests its usefulness to persons troubled by constipation as a material for simple and easy diet therapy.
