Abstract

It is considered that the weight of obese children is affected by weight gains due to physical growth and seasonal factors, which are especially noticeable in the summer. We found that these factors make it difficult to assess the real effect of an improvement class for obese children.<br>In this nine-month study, we led 155 obese children through a nutrition and exercise program in a weight-improvement class and evaluated the effect of this intervention by subtracting the weight deviation of the control group from that of the intervention group. We found a significant decrease in the degree of obesity in the intervention group that was related to the following factors: (1) a decrease in the degree of obesity after the summer vacation and (2) parents motivation to improve their child's obesity problem. However, (1) obesity in older children, (2) a good appetite, and (3) lifestyle of going to bed later negated the potential improvement in obesity. We also evaluated the factors related to the change in obesity by using the quantification theory. This method will enable more effective intervention by targeting those children who do not respond noticeably to the weight-improvement class. These children are determined from a score that is calculated from the change in the degree of obesity after the summer vacation and the results of the inquiry.
