Description

Effects of nutrition guidance on diet of nine patients with chronic constipation were investigated. Nutrient intake and condition of defecation were compared before and after the nutrition guidance with a two-week interval. The results obtained were as follows.
1) Nutrient intake before the guidance was lower than the recommended dietary allowances (RDA) in general. Especially, the mean intakes of calcium, iron and dietary fiber were as low as 371mg, 7.3mg and 10.5g respectively.
2) Nutrient intake after the guidance increased for all nutrients. Intake of dietary fiber increased to 185% of that before the guidance.
3) The total weight and the number of food items consumed increased from 929g to 1, 145g/day and from 17.8 to 23.6items/day respectively.
4) Defecation and medication changed remarkably after the guidance.
5) Those who had kept to the nutrition guidance for three years showed better defecation patterns.
