A comparative study on obesity, dietary life and life style was conducted on 1, 823 school children (aged 6 to 15 years) living in (A) suburban/farming area (283 boys and 261 girls), (B) mountain area (189 boys and 177 girls) and (C) a coastal area (478 boys and 435 girls) in Kumamoto Prefecture. The results of anthropometry, blood tests and questionnaires were as follows:
1) The means of height, weight and fat mass of the boys were higher in the farming area and lower in the mountains, as well as for the girls, except for the fat mass in junior high school students which was the same for all areas.
2) Significant partial correlation coefficients were obtained between body fat percent and height (r=-0.33 for boys and -0.26 for girls), weight (r=0.28 for boys, 0.18 for girls) and the upper arm circumference (r=0.40 for boys, 0.45 for girls). There was no correlation between the body fat percent and blood pressure and blood properties.
3) From the first factor analysis of the questionnaire on dietary habits, two principal components were obtained. The first was food consumption level or balance, and the second was intake of between-meal snacks and sweets. When the obese group (over 20 and 25% of body fat percent for boys and girls respectively) was compared with the non-obese group, the boys of the former group consumed more food than the latter, while the girls showed a reverse result. The intake of the between-meal snacks was larger for the obese group than for the non-obese group.
4) From the second factor analysis of questionnaire concerning life style and health, two principal components were obtained; activity or regularity of life style and generalized clinical conditions. Elementary school children of the obese group showed lack of activity or regularity in life style, but not the junior high school children. They were considered to be easily fatigued.
