- Actual State of Misconception Regarding Physique and Desire for Slenderness in Female Adolescents.

Misconception regarding the physique and intensity of desire for slenderness of 261 adolescent females were investigated by questionnaire survey. The mean height considered ideal by the subjects was 160.7±2.9cm and the weight 47.7±2.8kg. The overall tendency was that 68% of the subjects were within the normal weight range, but approximately 53% of those who considered themselves as of the normal physique showed excessive concern over their weight. The rate of misconception increased in those who belong to the group who considered themselves overweight, showing a high rate of misconception among adolescent females. On the other hand, 74% of all the subjects indicated a desire to be slender. Such desire was more pronounced in the subjects with self-image of obesity. Those subjects with a desire for slenderness indicated intense anxiety over their physique.
