In relation to the formation of hyperobese body of Sumo wrestlers, a nutritional survey on the eating behavior and dietary intake of nine wrestlers, six seniors and three juniors, was made for 4 days in the summer and 3 days in the winter.
The findings are as follows:
(1) As dietary customs, wrestlers take meals twice a day. At noon, after sumo exercises, they take full meals of Chanko-nabe. Then they take naps for some hours. Chanko-nabe is the typical cooking means of noon meals.
Evening meals are taken in the ordinary way.
They also take snacks at their pleasure in the afternoon. These behaviors seem to be most effective to the obese perfection of the wrestler's body.
(2) White rice, fish and meat with vegetables were ingested abundantly at both meals. But green vegetables and fruit intakes were rather small in amount.
(3) The average calorie intakes per day were 4, 500Cal for expert seniors and 4, 000Cal for fresh juniors.
(4) Protein intakes were sufficient, even if their body weights were taken into account.
(5) Generally vitamin A, B2 and Ca were observed to be deficient to some extent. Especially, vitamin A and Ca intakes were evidently low for junior wrestlers.
(6) From those view points, it still seems to be desirable to increase intakes of green vegetables, eggs, milk and milk products.
