In accordance with the TMI-2 accident, policy of medical treatment for radiation or nuclear emergency (in Japan) was reviewed and the system of it was considerably developed, in which the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) took an important role. For the purpose, an ad hoc committee for determining the policy of medical treatment for radiation emergency was organized in the Institute in 1980. As a result, medical facilities for heavily contaminated patients and/or severely irradiated victims have been established in and in the vicinity of the hospital attached to NIRS, which are also used for the training of personnels in nuclear installations organized by the Institute's Training School for medical procedures in the emergencies of radiation or nuclear accident. The principle, lay-out plan, equipments and functions of the facilities are explained and the program of the training courses are described. For the planning and preparedness of medical operations in the NIRS in the emergency, the per anent Committee for Nuclear Emergency Countermeasures are recently established and functioning at present in the Institute.
