Abstract
To determine the effects of application of ammonium nitrogen on the mineralization of soil organic nitrogen in paddy soils, a field experiment was conducted using the ^<15>N tracer method. The amount of soil-derived nitrogen absorbed by rice plants was higher in the plot with ammonium nitrogen application than that in the plot without ammonium nitrogen application. However, the amount of soil-derived nitrogen mineralized in the period of 56 days was almost the same in the plots with and without ammonium nitrogen application. Based on the results obtained, we considered that no particular increase in mineralization of soil organic nitrogen was brought by application of ammonium nitrogen and therefore this was not the reason for the difference in the amount of soil-derived nitrogen absorbed by rice plants.
