説明

The movement of nitrate with percolation water through soil into groundwater in vegetable growing areas was studied. Nitrate nitrogen concentration and δ^<15>N values were determined from samples collected periodically from artesian wells (3 and 6m deep), underdrainage and spring wells in a Welsh onion cultivated area in the Kushibiki fan, Saitama prefecture. The results are summarized as follows : 1) The average nitrate nitrogen concentration and δ^<15>N value in waters from the 3 and 6m artesian wells were 25.7,2.8mg L^<-1> and 3.63,4.70‰, respectively. Nitrate nitrogen concentration in both wells did not show any clear relationship. 2) The nitrate nitrogen concentration (35.5mgL^<-1>) and δ^<-15>N value (6.62‰) of the underdrainage water reflected rapid input from chemical fertilizers and farmyard manure. 3) The nitrate nitrogen concentration and δ^<-15>N value of spring water flowing out of the edge of the Kushibiki fan were 19.4mg L^<-1> and 7.94‰, respectively. The δ^<-15>N value determined was higher than those from the artesian wells and underdrainage water, indicating contamination of groundwater coming from the animal waste-treated area. 4) δ^<-15>N values of the 2N KCl extract nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen of the soil were 6.14‰ and 5.10‰, respectively while values for nitrification-inhibitor containing fertilizer and slow-release fertilizers were -6.11‰ and -2.21‰, respectively. 5) From the above results, it was estimated that the nitrate nitrogen concentration in ground water of this region originates mainly from soil organic matter. Nitrate from chemical fertilizers and an easily decomposable portion of farmyard manure appear in groundwater only for a short period immediately after application.
