Abstract

1)A suitability map for soybean in the drained paddy field in Iga area in Mie prefecture was prepared using the geographical information system for agricultural production. The growth of soybean was classified into 5 ranks, namely, 'suitable', 'fairly suitable', 'ordinary', 'fairly unsuitable', and 'unsuitable'. The regions of 'unsuitable' and 'fairly unsuitable' were found in the paddy field at valley bottom and in the paddy field of gley soil and that of heavily clayey soil with a high groundwater level. 2) The growth and yield of soybean in Iga area was investigated in 1990. A comparatively good yield of soybean ranged from that 'suitable' to that 'ordinary', with favorable growth. The yield in ranks of 'fairly unsuitable' to 'unsuitable' was very small in many spots. Thus, it was confirmed that the suitability maps for soybean well corresponded with the actual growth and yield of soybean. 3) The soil profiles, physical properties and chemical properties were analyzed in Iga area. In the topsoil of excellent growth field, the layer was deep, the compactness was low and porosity was slightly high. Much available moisture was found in the field of favorable growth. The liquid phase ratio of the subsoil was found to be high in the field of moderate to unfavorable growth. 4) In the soil of excellent growth field, the pH and calcium content were revealed to be high. Humus and available phosphoric acid were found much in the field of excellent and favorable growth. On the other hand in the field of moderate to unfavorable growth, the ratio of calcium-magnesium contents was low and the ratio of magnesium-potassium contents was high. Available nitrogen was found more in the field of unfavorable growth. 5) The relation between yield of soybean and soil factors was analyzed statistically using the quantification I analysis, and a high value of 0.967 was obtained as the multiple correlation coefficient. Comparatively high partial correlation coefficients were obtained for soil texture of the subsoil, water permeability in the field, solid phase ratio of the topsoil, porosity of the subsoil, pH, available nitrogen, humus, and available phosphoric acid. These results indicated that using the data base for soils and climates supplied by the geographical information system for agricultural production, suitability maps for soybean in the drained paddy field can be made easily, and used as practical soil map.
