Abstract

The graft modification of a styrene-butadiene block copolymer (SBS) was carried out by the graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), and the application to adhesives of this modified SBS (SBS-g-MMA) was investigated. It was found that a toluene solution of SBS-g-MMA was usable for the bond of plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) to SBS, that the peel strength of this adhesive was compared favorably with toluene solution of SBS, poly-MMA and their blend, and that SBS-g-MMA was useful as an adhesive for various adherends. In the bond of plasticized PVC to plasticized PVC this adhesive was not usable, and the peeled surface turned like a sponge as the result of the migration of a plasticizer. SBS-g-MMA was also usable as a hot-melt adhesive. These adhesives were inferior in the heat durability, and their peel strength decreased with an increasing temperature. It was confirmed that a styrene-isoprene block copolymer modified by the graft polymerization of MMA was also useful as an adhesive.
