Description
In the previous papers, we have elucidated that the low density polyethylene (LDPE) which has been considered to be non bio-degradable do degrade in bio-active soil. In this paper, we examined the effect of compounding agents to promote the degradation of LDPE in bio-active soil. We added dicmyl peroxide (DCP) to estimate the effect of the acceleration of simple thermal oxidation of LDPE. The addition of small amount of DCP was enough to accelerate the oxidation. In order to estimate the bio-degradability of practical LDPE compound, we added vegetable oil to starch filled LDPE. The effect of addition of DCP was also investigated for this compound by a long-term burial test in a bio-active soil. The synergism of the addition of the oil and DCP was remarkable. The tensile strength of the LDPE with DCP decreased much faster than the one without DCP. The promoted degradation of the LDPE compound was confirmed by the increase of the carbonyl bands in FT-IR analysis. In addition, photo-degradation of the LDPE with DCP remarkably progress.
