Abstract

Considering their structure, dawsonite and hydrotalcite, which are Al and Na-or Mg-hydrated basic carbonates, are expected to render Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) least combustible and absorb well HCl generated in burning PVC.Thus the nitrogen-oxygen index (OI) and quantity of HCl genetated through pyrolysis were measured on PVC-filled synthetic dawsonite (DN) and hydrotalcite (HT).<BR>DN and HT showed a high OI-value equal to that of Al (OH) 3.On the other hand, DN and HT had a strong absorptive power of HCl, especially HT being very strong. This caused PVC to be colored at roll millny temperature. Therefore, it will be necessary to take some measures for restraint of coloring in roll work. Two methods were tried for restraint of coloring. One of them was wax treatment of filler, but this turned out ineffective. Another method was introduction of strong acid radicals into filler. This method was tried on HT, yielding a fairly good effect, but it was unable to restrain coloring above40phr of filler contents, and OI-value decreased slightly.
