Abstract

A simple and rapid method for the determination of moisture content in rubber has been developed. The sample is heated to130-150°Cin a stream of dry nitrogen and the vaporized moisture is titrated with an automatic Karl-Fischer coulometric titrator.
The moisture content in raw rubber for tire treads and compounded rubber before and after vulcanization was determined. The measurement took less than 25minutes.The results are more accurate by the present method than by the oven-drying method and they agree well with those by the oven gas chromatography.
The method was applied to examination of the relation between the moisture content and the foaming during the continuous vulcanization of the compounded rubber for weather strip of automobile. The method has also been applied to the absorption of mosture in tire tread.
