Polyhalo-organic substances, i.e. liquid chloroparaffin, polychloroprene, polyvinyl chloride and chlorosulfonated polyethylene, were found to promote the cure of butadiene-styrene rubber with benzotrichloride and stannous chloride. The physical properties of these vulcanizates were investigated in comparison with sulfur vulcanizates.
The abrasion resistance, modulus, hardness and tensile strength at break on the former indicated higher values. than on the latter
Liquid chloroparaffin used as a promoter also showed an interesting behavior as a reactive softener because it acted as an palsticizer in compounding process and then entered into the curing system in vulcanization process. Thus, polyvinyl chloride can be regarded as a reactive filler other than as a promoter.
