Abstract

A Banbury mixer was used at a fixed rate of rotation of the rotor to masticate the commercial SBR. samples The of average molecular weight of the sample decreased exponentially with mastication time and seemed to approach to a finite value. The amount of input for the mastication, denoted by W, was a function of mastication time, t, and it was approximated by
W=W0e-t/τ+W
Here W0 and τ are the constants independent of time t. W was found to be directly proportional to the average molecular weight of the sample while being masticated. The samples masticated for various periods of time were then tested in a Mooney viscometer and it was found that the effects of mastication on the results thus obtained could be well interpreted by the change in molecular weight of the samples.
