抄録

The purpose of the present paper is to describe the effect of N-substituted methylthiourea as vulcanization accelerator of natural rubber.<br>Some substituted thioureas, i. e., mono-, symmetrical di-, unsymmetrical di-, tri-, and tetra-methyl thiourea were tested.<br>As the results it can be suggested that the lone pair electrons at the nitrogen atom of thiourea seem to transfer to the 3d vacant orbital of sulfur atom in S8 ring to form a transient dative bond and at the same time another electron pair at sulfur atom in S8 ring transfers to sulfur atom of thiourea molecule. It is probable that such interaction would result in the opening of eight membered sulfur ring and sulfur radicals produced by the thiourea derivatives would contribute to crosslinking of rubber.<br>When the scorch time of rubber compound ingrediated with thiourea derivative as well as super delocalizabilities values of the derivative were plotted against number of methyl groups, the shapes of the both curves were much the same except for symmetrical dimethyl thiourea.<br>It may be concluded that the larger the sum of the two superdelocalizabilities of thiourea derivative, thion type or thiol type, the easier the electron transfer, and the more effective as the vulcanizatiog accelerator.
