In order to study viscoelastic properties of crystalline polymers, measurements of resilience were made on polyethylene by Dunlop Tripsometer over a wide temperature range. In low density polyethylene, β absorption was observed at -20°C, and α absorption at 60-75°C. In high density polyethylene, β absorption was also observed, but α absorption disappeared. The apparent activation energy was given as 64, 36 and 11Kcal/mol for α, β and γ transition of low density polyethylene respectively. From the estimated segment size, γ transition was corresponded with motion release of amorphous short polymethylene chains, β transition with segments including about one branch, and α transition with more long chains by crystalline melting. It may be deduced that transitions of viscoelasticity and dielectricity were relaxation phenomena originated in same original mechanism, considering nondifferent activation energy and transition temperature.
