Description
Individual characteristics of a firearm are printed as striated marks on the fired bullets. These characteristics have been observed and analyzed by experts for identifying the firearm. In this paper, a method of computer-aided firearm identification based on signal analysis is presented. One dimensional wave forms are extracted from striated mark images of two bullets under the test and compared each other. Similarity between the two wave forms is numerically evaluated and used for identification based on a probability model. Results of the comparison experiment with two bullets fired from the same gun showed that the identification can be achieved under a significance level of 10-6.
