抄録

A compact Electronic English Word Translator has been developed. Firstly a character image is put in by using a manual scanner, and word space is presumed and word region is extracted. Then this extracted English word is translated into Japanese by using English-Japanese dictionary in ROM memory (4Mx2), and the result is displayed on a LCD panel. We have realized an auto-extracting-word method and an auto-cutting-character method by setting up two parameters (normal word space and normal character width), which are obtained by counting peripheral distribution over word line region. This translator is of 130 grams weight and has 90% word recognition rate.
