8K/4K Super Hi-Vision (SHV) test satellite broadcasting was launched on 1st August, 2016. Highly efficient video coding technology is needed to realize the SHV broadcasting services since they have huge amounts of data. NHK has researched highly efficient video encoding schemes considering the characteristics of the SHV signals and developed several video coding devices for real-time transmission. This paper describes an overview of the developed video encoder devices, which are based on the international standardized video coding scheme. Furthermore, research activities for developing more efficient video coding technology and future plans are mentioned.
