Abstract

Ultrasonic vector flow mapping (VFM) is a method to visualize cardiac flow using vectors. In this article, the VFM algorithm estimating the blood flow vector based on ultrasound doppler measurement and a two dimensional mass conservation law (2D flow assumption) for cardiac flow is briefly reviewed. Since the VFM accuracy can be easily degraded due to a violation of the 2D flow assumption in real situations, the VFM accuracy was validated with a heart phantom by comparing it with particle image velocimetry (PIV). Moreover, a novel method, called a posteriori “VFM accuracy estimation (VAE)” which can estimate the VFM uncertainty for each patient, is introduced to make it possible to refine the quality of the VFM-based diagnosis.
