Abstract

There are numerous challenges concerning water including problems such as increasing the local water supply to meet increased demand associated with lifestyle changes. Also the increasing water usage due to the expansion of food production associated with the increasing global population and the issue of “virtual water” related to low food self-sufficiency of Japan. The growing demand for bottled water due to concerns over the safety of drinking tap water is also a serious problem. The other issues are the increasing demand for agricultural water associated with the increasing production of biomass such as corn and other crops, and the regional distortion of demand for water due to urbanization. Therefore, since water shortages are linked to increased demand for energy, water use is closely related to the problem of global warming. The water problem is not merely a problem of demand for water. It is necessary to understand that it is linked to a wide range of energy and environmental issues and, in particular, it is necessary to improve the perceived safety of tap water. Activities that will enable people to reacknowledge the importance of contiguous water sources are required.
