Description

A carbon microcoil (CMC) has an interesting three-dimensional (3D)-helical/spiral structure. It is a kind of vapor-grown carbon fiber (VGCF) and can be obtained by the catalytic pyrolysis of acetylene. However, its morphology, growth mechanism, microstructure and properties are very different from those of VGCF or nanotube. The CMC with a high reproducibility and high yield was first prepared by Motojima, et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett., 56. 321(1990)], and is now attracting considerable interest as a novel functional material with a very high potential for wide applications.
