Abstract

The history of the research and development of organic semiconductor materials and devices, starting from the early 1950s is reviewed in this paper. Milestones in the establishment of basic concepts for organic semiconductor devices are discussed. Case studies on organic light-emitting diodes, organic thin-film solar cells and organic field-effect transistors are reported. It was found that one of the most important key points for device applications is to suitably classify organic semiconductors into nondoped wide-band-gap intrinsic semiconductors.
