Description

Several types of electric rocket engine, i.e., the ion engine, Hall-type plasma engine, direct-current arcjet engine and MPD plasma engine, are introduced and their recent research and development and prospects are reviewed. Both high-power and low-power electric rocket engines are promising for future space missions. High-power (>10kW) electric propulsion will be required for high-level international missions such as Moon base construction, manned exploration of Mars and deep space exploration although many problems regarding the development of electric rocket engines remain unsolved. In the Project of Osaka Institute of Technology Electric-Rocket-Engine onboard Small Space Ship (PROITERES), a nano satellite with low-power (2.4W) electrothermal pulsed plasma engines will be launched at the end of 2012. The main mission is to achieve the powered flight of the nano satellite using an electric engine. The development of the satellite flight model was completely finished in 2011.
