Abstract

Nanophotonics is a novel optical technology utilizing optical near fields. An optical near field is regarded as a dressed photon and energy transfer between nanometric materials is due to the exchange of dressed photons. On the basis of these concepts, a variety of experimental results have been quantitatively analyzed and explained. Furthermore, applications to devices, fabrications, and systems beyond the diffraction limit have been realized. It is essential that novel functions and phenomena are realized that will enable the qualitative innovation of optical technology. In this paper the history and present status of nanophotonics are reviewed. A future outlook is also given.
