Abstract

We have developed an automatic system for earthquake early warning (EEW), which determines hypocenter location and magnitude within 1 to 3 seconds. Our system was installed in Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) that started the practical service of EEW by TV and radio in October 2007. It determined hypocenter parameters within a few seconds from P wave arrivals. We found that 99% of hypocenter locations are nearly correct. We introduced a shaking intensity magnitude in addition to the moment magnitude so as to estimate a more reliable shaking intensity. We developed a home seismometer for the installation of dense seismic station for EEW. We demonstrated that EEW can produce warning times of 30-50 s for large earthquakes, such as Tokai, Tonankai and Nankai earthquakes.
