Abstract

Since a frequency comb enables us to coherently link the frequencies of the microwave, optical, and THz regions, it is possible to establish the terahertz (THz) frequency metrology traceable to the time of the SI base units. In this review, two techniques for establishing the THz frequency metrology based on a THz frequency comb, namely, THz-comb-referenced spectral analysis and THz comb spectroscopy, are reviewed. The former determines the absolute frequency of a CW-THz wave at a precision of 1 × 10-11, whereas the latter enables us to use the hyperfine-structured spectrum of the THz comb, having a frequency interval of 250 MHz and a line width of 25 MHz, for precise THz spectroscopy. These techniques will open the door for the establishment of frequency metrology in the THz region.
