Description

The tsunami of the strike-slip earthquake that occurred on the 2018 Sulawesi Island Earthquake had arrived earlier than estimated from the seismic fault. This tsunami was captured as video images from an airplane and fishing boat immediately after the occurrence. These images were posted via Social Net-working Service (SNS) and became very important information to clarify the tsunami caused by the submarine landslide. Location, height and propagation speed of the tsunami from these images were estimated. As a result, several tsunamis occurred in a short time was clarified and the estimated height of the tsunami exceeded 20m. In addition, the estimated tsunami source was used for numerical simulation which explained that the tsunami occurred near the coast and moved to seabed slower than the propagation speed of tsunami.
