Abstract

This article discusses several characteristics of academically and/or practically superb works about management researches. As examples, two seminal works of innovation management, Myers and Marquis (1969) of MIT and Project SAPPHO of Sussex University (in Freeman 1982), are investigated. These researches were neither published in rigorous academic journals nor sold as best-selling books; and yet they were both seminal works that opened up a new academic field. They are also important examples of “researches on middle numbers,” in which a significant number of case studies were systematically codified for subsequent statistical analyses. In such seminal researches, data colleting process itself is very challenging, which is one of the reasons why they are considered to be highly valuable both in the academic communities and for industrial practitioners.
