Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of altering initial activity plans in pedestrian travel behavior in shopping districts of the city center. The findings are based on questionnaires to visitors in the central area of Kobe City. First, we classify respondents’ travel behavior into four patterns according to the alteration of activity plans and clarify the differences among those patterns. Next, we reveal factors influencing their decision of altering activity plans using binary logit model. Finally, we examine the relationship between the alteration of activity plans and their travel behavior, through development of choice behavior model of activity continuation and activity durations using Type II Tobit model. The results show that most respondents alter activity plans and the majority of them visit some activity locations in addition to their initial activity plans, and encouraging their alteration behavior contributes to vitalization of the city center.
