<p>  The phenomenon of an elderly person with dementia talking about the present place as a different one has been considered as disorientation regarding place. This study tried to reconsider this phenomenon as the maintained abilities of a female elderly with dementia. Her utterances were analyzed througe discourse analysis, which revealed the following two features. The first one is the “joint reference → spreading the topic” formulation, that is, at first she referred to objects seen in the present place and then spread the topic further. This formulation suggests that she could talk jointly with another person in human relationship. The second one is the “referring to the past → however → referring to absence of it at present” formulation. When discrepancies occurred between present situations and past ones, she referred to the differences between them. These results suggest that the utterance acts considered as disorientation regarding place by an elderly person with dementia can be reconsidered as maintained abilities of consideration for others and awareness of surrounding situations.</p>
